The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is floating back into town this weekend – and if you’re staying in the city, you’re in for a treat.

While the official fiesta takes place at Ashton Court, you don’t have to join the crowds to enjoy the magic. The balloons usually take off early in the morning or around sunset (weather permitting), and thanks to Bristol’s hills and open spaces, there are plenty of amazing spots across the city where you can catch the action – no wristband or wellies required.

Here are our favourite spots to watch the sky fill with colour:

🌅 Clifton Observatory & The Downs

One of the most iconic viewpoints in Bristol. The Downs offer sweeping views over the Avon Gorge, and if the wind’s right, balloons drift directly over the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Perfect at sunrise or sunset – bring a coffee and your camera.

Top Tip: check out The White Lion Pub, situated in the Avon Gorge Hotel just down the road. It has a large outdoor terrace where you can enjoy food and drinks whilst admiring the stunning view of the balloons going over Clifton Suspension Bridge.

🏞 Brandon Hill & Cabot Tower

Just a short walk from the city centre (and many of our serviced apartments!), Brandon Hill is a quiet green spot with epic views across the city skyline. Climb to the top of Cabot Tower if it’s open – it’s one of the best free views in the city.

🧺 Victoria Park, Bedminster

Tucked away just south of the river, this park is a local favourite for balloon-watching. It’s relaxed, dog-friendly, and gives you a great angle on balloons flying in from Ashton Court. Morning launch? Bring breakfast and a blanket.

🌿 Troopers Hill, St George

One of East Bristol’s hidden gems! This wild, open nature reserve has panoramic views and a chilled-out vibe – ideal for catching the sunrise and those magical balloon glows. Less crowded too.

🏞 Perrett Park, Totterdown

If you’re staying south of the river, this is another fantastic balloon-spotting location. High up on a hill with amazing views of the city – Totterdown’s painted houses and the balloons make a very Insta-worthy combo.

🎡 Bristol Harbourside

Not always the highest viewpoint, but sometimes you get balloons flying right over the water. Watch from Queen Square, Millennium Promenade, or even while enjoying breakfast at one of the harbour cafés.

🌉 Bedminster Roof Terraces (Shh…)

If you’re lucky enough to be in a rooftop apartment or know someone with one in Bedminster or Southville, you’ve basically got a VIP ticket to the show. Early riser? Coffee on the roof = elite balloon fiesta energy.

🛏️ Staying With Urban Apartments This Weekend?

You’re in the perfect place to explore Bristol and spot balloons without the chaos. Our serviced apartments are right in the heart of the action, with comfy beds, stylish interiors, and all the space you need to relax after a sunrise balloon chase.

So, whether you’re here for the fiesta, a city break, or just passing through – don’t miss one of the most magical weekends in Bristol’s calendar. 🌈🎈
